I think the WTC announcement many others are referring to is WTC's position on the latest Lance Armstrong scandal. That said, I think it is interesting that you bring this up--perhaps they are trying to shift some of the attention from Lance to their new race. They've got sh*tloads of publicity right now--what better time to unveil a new race than when you have sh*tloads of publicity?

The timing (near the end of the day on a Friday) does not suggest that they are making what they believe will be a positive announcement. This is about when presidential administrations "announce' things they dont want people paying attention to. I suspect they cut some sort of deal with Armstrong to let him race (probably to avoid litigation). If it was a new race announcement, it would like have been out already so all the STers (which we KNOW is the universe of triathletes) would be chattering about that instead of drug issues. They are kind of in a no win on this one. Lancer haters will say they caved. Lance lovers will feel vindicated. Nothing changes. But we all had fun arguing the finer points of the quasi legal process governing the subject.

But it would be cool if it was Tahoe.

Hopefully they know this timing will have the opposite effect, as the weekend is when triathletes will start paying attention to their non-work related activities.

I agree politically bad news would be buried in a weekend news cycle. Hopefully we'll find out soon enough... Lance or a new race, ST is sure to blow the F up.

I think this gives WTC way too much credit. They are not that well thought out. Their timing isn't great, but it's not because they don't want the message to get out.
Remember, never attribute to malice that which can otherwise be explained by stupidity.

Another new IM next year?? If that is the case I may have to go back on my word to not race an IM next year. I'm sure my other half would understand, I did pass up on IM Cabo since it's on our anniversary. That is considered a compromise right?

If it is announcement about letting Lance race, they should do it at around 1:30 pm PDT. This announcement is not to keep triathletes happy, but to deal with fallout from mainstream media.

With the Euro 2012 over the weekend and NBA grabbing all of the attention in major media, WTC will have to deal with less question on why they are letting Lance back in on the technicality that the investigation is yet to commence. By Monday, the Lance story slides into the background chatter and will only be prominent on ST. Smart move by WTC to schedule at that time. They are in a no win situation in the near term and have to do some damage control communication.

According to @LavaMagazine at 11:28AM this morning, neither they, or WTC has announcement to do with Lance. It IS about a new race.

Contrary to yesterday's advisory from Ironman, there will no follow-up statement today at 11a Eastern regarding status of Lance Armstrong.

Then at 1pm they post this.

As a follow up to our last tweet: BUT, we do have an exciting race announcement comin' at ya at noon, PST.
