Tentative Identification of Phytochemicals from Smilax glabra and Smilax corbularia Extracts by LC-QTOF/MS and Their Bioactive Potential

The Smilacaceae family has been used as a food source and herbal medicine for a long time. This study aims to identify the phytochemicals extracted from Smilax glabra and Smilax corbularia by using LC-QTOF/MS analysis and determine their bioactive potential. Compounds were identified from S. glabra and S. corbularia extracts by LC–QTOF-MS and it was found that longistylin A and CAY10435 have higher degrees of matching compounds (99.66% and 99.87%). Smilax glabra showed antioxidant capacity, i.e., DPPH and ABTS at percentage inhibitions of 71.94 ± 1.46% and 59.84 ± 4.80%, respectively, and FRAP at 730.69 ± 33.62 mg AAE/100 g sample. The total phenolic compound contents of the ethanol, methanol, and water extracts were 0.017 ± 0.001, 0.015 ± 0.001, and 0.016 ± 0.001 mg GAE/g, respectively, while the total flavonoid contents were 0.043 ± 0.002, 0.033 ± 0.002, and 0.006 ± 0.003 mg QE/g, respectively. Secondary metabolites termed as phytochemicals are produced by plants as a kind of defence against pathogenic microbial invasion and environmental stress. These phytochemicals have been demonstrated to offer therapeutic benefits in the treatment of human ailments as well as pharmacological effects. It is common knowledge that the active components in medicinal plants combine to lessen both the primary and secondary symptoms of a range of illnesses. Popularly known as "Jin Gang Teng" or "Ba Qia," Smilax china (SC) is a common ingredient in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM). It is used to treat diuretic and rheumatoid arthritis problems, detoxify the body, and treat tumours, inflammatory diseases, lumbago, and gout. In the current investigation, the DPPH assays, in vitro anti-inflammatory activity, and anti-diabetic activity against alpha-amylase were used to evaluate the ability of the aqueous extract and ethanolic extract (SC-A & SC-ET) in scavenging free radicals. Additionally, SC looked into the lethality of brine shrimp and antibacterial efficacy against S. aureus and P. aeruginosa. Aqueous and ethanolic extracts of Smilax china were investigated for their in-vitro antioxidant, antibacterial, anti-diabetic, and anti-inflammatory properties. Due to the presence of physiologically active compounds in the herbal preparation, the data given provide scientific proof for the antioxidant and other therapeutic efficacy of the SC A, SC ME, & SC ET preparation.

Since time immemorial plants have been used for various needs such as food, fodder, construction, dyes and medicine. Smilax zeylanica L., belonging to the monocotyledon family Smilacaceae, is a dioecious climbing shrub with woody stem. The plant is used as a substitute for Sarsaparilla. In this review, we present updated information on the ethnobotanical uses, phytochemistry and pharmacological activities shown by S. zeylanica by referring standard flora, journal articles and various search engines. Anti-Allergic Activities of Smilax glabra Rhizome Extracts and Its Isolated Compounds

The rhizomes of Smilax glabra (SG) has long been used in Traditional Chinese and Thai herbal medicine to treat a variety of infectious diseases and immunological disorders. To investigate the in vitro anti-allergic activities of crude extracts andpure isolated flavonoid compounds from SG by determination of inhibitory effect on antigen-induced release of β-hexosaminidasefrom RBL-2H3 cells. The in vitro inhibitory effects ofcrude aqueous and organic extracts on β-hexosaminidase release in RBL-2H3 cells were evaluated as an in vitro indication ofpossible anti-allergic activity. Bioassay-guided fractionation of extracts was used to isolate flavonoid compounds from the ethanolic extracts. The 95% and 50% ethanolic extracts of SG showed remarkably high anti-allergic activity, with IC50 values of 5.74 ± 2.44 and 23.54 ± 4.75 µg/ml, much higher activity than that for Ketotifen (IC50 58.90 µM). Cytotoxic and Antioxidant Activity of a Chemically Characterized Extract of Smilax aspera Leaves and Stems

The present study identifies the phytochemical profile of a hydroalcoholic extract derived from Smilax aspera leaves and stems, estimates its antioxidant capacity and evaluates its cytotoxic activity against glioblastoma (A172 cell line) and rhabdomyosarcoma (TE671 cell line). Chemical analysis of leaves and stems was performed with liquid chromatography analysis combined with a quadrupole time-of-flight high-resolution mass spectrometry (LC/Q-TOF/HRMS). The antioxidant activity of the extract was evaluated with the 2,2-Diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) and the 2,2′-azinobis[3-ethylbenzthiazoline-6-acid)] (ABTS) assays. Cell viability was examined using the alamar blue assay. Most of the compounds tentatively identified belonged to the flavonoids family, with rutin being the most abundant, followed by luteolin.
