If you want to attend and get onto the waitlist, please hit me up via email or SMS and I’ll do my best to get you in! SF Deep Tech Week is totally unhinged — and it’s only day one — the intersections and crossovers are already showing evidence of massive serendipity…

What a night - over 300 passionate, curious scientists, engineers, founders, and investors, rapt with attention for hours, as we heard from leaders across the spectrum — experimental neuroscience, reverse engineering the brain, the AI of connectomics, novel therapeutics, and brain-computer interfaces. Thank you as well to the organizations behind all this Deep Tech: E11 Bio, the Allen Institute, Google, NysnoBio, Paradromics Inc., Breakout Ventures, Palo Santo, and DataJoint!

From SD to Roma! Which Neptune do you prefer? My vote is for Ravi Kiron — much more colorful — thanks for a great #BIO2024!

I’m excited to take on a new role as Co-Founder and President of DataJoint. It’s truly a privilege to partner with Dimitri Yatsenko and our team to help research labs make their science reproducible and scalable.

Weirdly, I said this exact line yesterday after I got off the phone with an angel who said “yes” to investing in my company!

Fantastic article by Michael Eisenstein in today's Nature on the $100M MICrONS Project. https://lnkd.in/gByz5qrk"It took US$100 million and years of effort by more than 100 scientists ... weeks of all-nighters and a painstaking global proofreading effort that continues even now. Despite the hurdles, the core of the project — conceived and funded by the US Intelligence Advanced Research Projects Activity (IARPA) — is complete."Congrats to our co-founder and board member Andreas Tolias, and to our founder and CEO Dimitri Yatsenko for helping make this happen. (DataJoint serves as the "system of record" for the functional mapping of the cortex and the integration of functional, structural, and connectivity data.) Stay tuned for more from DataJoint: we're developing an array of tools and capabilities to enable everyone to explore, study, analyze, and share findings and discoveries in this treasure trove of scientific data. We aim to democratize access to MICrONS and to redefine what is possible with large-scale collaboration across neuroscience, data science, and engineering. Please DM me if you'd like to work with us to make it happen!

It’s a surprising low for the Chancery Court. And until this year, the Texas trial courts (elected judges?) would have made us a silly place to incorporate a company like Tesla. The new Texas Business Courts should make a big difference (once they get rolling and overcome the inevitable meta-litigation). See, e.g., https://lnkd.in/g6yxuu2w

Observability into his lab’s data and analysis — a key element of SciOps Maturity — could have prevented the downfall of Stanford University President Marc Tessier-Lavigne. His resignation and the withdrawal of his neuroscience publications hurt Stanford’s reputation and contributed to the reliability crisis in publicly funded research. It’s tougher for Harvard University with the resignation of President Claudine Gay. The problems sound in culture, not science. They’re not amenable to my kinds of tools — software, standardization, statistical quality control, and Lean operations.Fortunately, neuroscientists at Harvard Medical School include many DataJoint customers and users. They’re taking seriously the need for integrity and reproducibility in the face of exponentially increasing research complexity. In a few years, we’ll look back on the 2020s as a new beginning, a transformation in the velocity and reliability of scientific discovery and a restoration of public trust.
