So I had some questions about exp-shared pets; thanks to the community, I now have some answers. Read on.
1) Exp-shared pets do NOT steal exp from your equipped pet. Instead, they earn exp at 25% the rate of the equipped pet's exp gain (so 100% + 25%).
The upshot of this is that you should always have at least one pet with an exp share.
2) From the wiki:
Pets gain experience equal to the player's skill experience if the skill and type are the same. If not, 1/4 of the player's skill experience is given if the skill does not match the pet type (except for the Alchemy and Enchanting skills where they rewards 1/12th of the experience instead).
This also applies to exp-shared pets. If the player gains exp in a skill that doesn't match the exp-shared pet, then its exp will be slashed by an additional 1/4 in addition to only receiving exp at 25% of the rate of the equipped pet. This works out to a rate of 25% ÷ 4 = 6.25%.
The upshot of this is that if you're going to grind a specific skill for a while, try to only use exp-shared pets that match that skill.
3) Here's some examples! Answers may or may not be accurate.
a. If I gain 10,000 mining exp with the following pets, how much pet exp will each one receive? Assume taming level 50.
- Equipped Mithril Golem with 40% mining pet exp boost (mining pet)
- Exp-shared Endermite (mining pet)
- Exp-shared Grandma Wolf (combat pet)
- (10,000 • 1.40 • 1.50) = 21,000 pet exp for the Mithril Golem
- (21,000 • 0.25 • 0.50) = 2,625 pet exp for the Endermite
- (21,000 • 0.25 • 0.50) ÷ 4 = 656.25 pet exp for the Grandma Wolf
b. If I gain 10,000 mining exp with the following pets, how much pet exp will each one receive? Assume taming level 50.
- Equipped Blue Whale with 40% mining pet exp boost (fishing pet)
- Exp-shared Endermite (mining pet)
- Exp-shared Grandma Wolf (combat pet)
- (10,000 • 1.40 • 1.50 • 0.25) = 5,250 pet exp for the Blue Whale
- (5,250 • 0.25 • 0.50) = 656.25 pet exp for the Endermite
- (5,250 • 0.25 • 0.50) ÷ 4 = 164.06 pet exp for the Grandma Wolf
c. If I gain 10,000 combat exp with the following pets, how much pet exp will each one receive? Assume taming level 50.
- Equipped Mithril Golem with 40% mining pet exp boost (mining pet)
- Exp-shared Endermite (mining pet)
- Exp-shared Grandma Wolf (combat pet)
- (10,000 • 1.50 • 0.25) = 3,750 pet exp for the Mithril Golem
- (3,750 • 0.25 • 0.50) ÷ 4 = 117.19 pet exp for the Endermite
- (3,750 • 0.25 • 0.50) = 468.75 pet exp for the Grandma Wolf
Thanks for reading! All answers/ratings are welcome ^_^

1) the exp shared pets do not take exp from the active pet(like pokemon), they gain 25% of your pets current exp and stacks with any boosts they have
so think its more like post ORAS exp all
e.g you are taming 50 but your pet is holding a 50% exp boost, your exp shared pet gets 25% of the total exp that pet recieves after the 50% exp boost and taming boost is applied to it

You can do the math for the xp yourself.
For the other questions:
Your equipped pet gets 100% and the XP share pet 25% of the XP that the equipped pet gets. I'm not sure how the xp is calculated for for example mining to fishing pets.

if you gain 100 mining exp with an active golem pet out and an inactive exp shared lion, the active golem pet would appear as if you gained 100 mining xp while you had it equipped, and the exp shared lion would appear as if you had gained 25 mining xp while you had it equipped.

b. This part applies to exp-shared pets, they gain exp at only 25% ÷ 4 = 6.25% if the exp does not match their type
this is the case for question #2
if you mine with a mining pet, but while exp sharing a fishing pet, it will receive 6.25%

1) exp share basically generates exp out of thin air, it doesn’t affect the exp gain of the original pet
2) Yes the mismatch skill type penalty DOES apply on exp share
3) I am not sure whether the modifiers stack additively or multiplicatively, but using exp share on more than 1 pet is inefficient because the extra exp is split between them

One of you is saying that the non-matching penalty doesn't apply to exp shared pets, the other is. . . . hmmm

You're certain about your answer for #2? Because it's really important. That would mean that you should never keep an exp-shared pet in your menu while grinding a skill that doesn't match that pet.

i think we’re both saying that mismatch applies.

The first one means that your lion will gain 25 ‘mining exp’, not ‘pet exp’
So the penalty will then apply, making it 0.25*25 pet exp

skrubalicious said you would recieve 25 mining exp on the lion pet. 25 mining exp on a lion pet would translate into 6 total*** exp so yeah he's saying the same thing

Basically, during my grind to fishing 50, my squid went up by around 50m overflow pet exp, but my exp shared pigman only got around 3m exp (rough estimations)

The 40% and 50% boosts should be multiplicative

I'm slow today, could you show me what the numbers would be in that case

The mithril golem would gain 21,000 exp (10,000*1.5*1.4)
The endermite would gain 2,625 exp (21,000*0.125)
The grandma wolf would gain 656 exp (21,000*0.125/4)

Fascinating, so the exp-shared pet calculations use the pet exp for the equipped pet, not the base skill exp received
Thank you very much
